Boyfriend went fishing ,the next day is arm swoll up and a line of fluid was going up his arm. Couldn't get into dr's so because it was getting to him he went to hospital . They told him 6 people had been in that day with the same thing. They said because of the hot weather the insects from abroad had been coming over here. They gave him antibiotics and said if got worse to return (luckily it going now but itching ) The other day on the front of our newspaper said how bad the mosquitoes were biting and were getting nuisance here. Is this happening by you ?
A mate of mine got bit a while ago, she had two bites on her ankle that were swollen and looked really bad. Half way through her shift at work they had to take her to hospital as it was hurting her so much, she too had a line going up her leg. They gave her antibiotics and thankfully it started going down after a couple of days
On TV yesterday it said that there had been a massive increase in all type of insect populations due to the dry winter and scorching summer, so chances are, bites will increase too.
Sorry to hijack your thread Inej but I've asked a question about spiders in animals and nature so if anyone does have a knowledge of bugs, would they mind popping over there too please? Thanks!
Really sorry Inej. Just thought your question might attract some experts! Really sorry again xx
Hi,
If you eat citrus fruits before going out, lemons, limes, oranges, then they will stay away from you, but if you eat bananas (lots of potassium) they will eat you, so stay away from potassium foods beofre venturing out. As for garlic, very good for you generally, but not for making friends, sorry Ward
You don't say which part of the country you live in. I have never been bitten as badly as I have this year, i really suffered a few weeks ago and needed time off work. the bites on my hand were swollen so badly that i couldn't move my thumb and two of my fingers. If you live in the south east of england there has been an alarming increase in the insect population with flies and mosquitoes breeding rapidly in the warm weather. Since we are officially classed as semi-desert in this region we should expect to encounter the same sort of problems that other nations in this classification encounter. The problem is not helped by the increase in the amount of household waste we produce, foreign travel and greater imports of foriegn goods, which bring in species that were never meant to be native to these shores. Our local health centre has seen an increase in allergic reactions to some of the bites and their advice is that we should start to take the same precautions here as we would if we went somewhere hot on holiday. For example, cover up in the evening / early morning when mozzies are about, use insect repellent if we are going to be near water (garden ponds that have no pump to clean the water are ideal breeding grounds) and steer clear of marshy areas. The best advice they gave me was try eating marmite, it's supposed to deter the little blighters.
I'm in London, and my flatmate got bitten by a mosquito in her sleep last week. The next morning her left eye was swollen shut. The doctor gave her steriods, piriton and antibiotics, but it still took 3 days before she could open her eye properly!. She is now back to normal, and thankfully no longer scaring small children!
