The National Australian Poetry Final
On the day of the Poetry final the two finalists were a graduate from the University of New South Wales and a bumpkin from the outback.
Their final task was to compose a poem lasting no more than 20 seconds with the word Timbuktu in it.
The uni grad was up first and with mic in hand he recited,
'Across the shimmering desert sand
There came in sight......a caravan
Men on camels.....two by two
Destination.....Timbuktu'
The audience went wild and roared their appreciation with thunderous applause.
Now it was the turn of the Outback bumpkin.
With mic clutched nervously in his hand he recited
'Tim and I a hunting went
We met three girls in a pop-up tent
They were three and we were two
So I bucked one and Tim bucked two.
