Most of the time their upbringing does play a major role in how they turn out as adults but it doesn't always apply to every individual. It all comes down to the choices they make as they are growing up that really determine how they turn out. For instance an abused child has the opportunity and is eventually faced with the choice of whether to take out their hurt and anger on others and become an abuser themselves -OR- to never do that to another human being and/or help others who are going through what they did. Some people don't reflect their upbringing at all so you never really know.
