Friend Ex Directory
12 Answers
I have a friend mid 80s who's phone no. is ex directory, when she rings me her no. says private number even though I have her listed. I have told her she can ring anytime if she needs help and I thought I would be able to see if it was her. I know she can add a number before ringing but she wouldn't remember. Just hoped there might be another simpler way. Can anyone help pkease?

// Number withheld and ex-directory are two different things. If you are ex-directory your number will still show when you make outbound calls. If you have the number withheld feature on your account your number will not be shown.//

The simplest answer would be she's hiding her calling line identity, maybe her phone's set up to automatically do it, or maybe the account is.
A longer shot is that, if the issue is she's calling your mobile, do you have her listed twice in the directory ? Unsure why it'd show as private but I know some mobiles show nothing if confused by finding two matches.

We used to have a problem where my dad's phone was automatically set to withhold numbers and our phone was set to block anonymous callers, so my dad's call was always blocked when he tried to call.
The way round it:
Your friend needs to dial 1470 before your number (NOT 141 or 1471). This releases their number an a call-by-call basis and you'll be able to see their number when they call you :)

//// This is on my land line, and I have caller ID so thought it would show as I have her listed. ////
My previous reply provides you with a solution; although your friend will have to dial 1470, every time, before she dials your number.
If she wants a more permanent solution, she'll have to contact her network provider, as the number is set to automatically withhold her number by her network.

I suppose the simplest answer is you answer all your calls :-) I also have an ex-directory number but also the account is set to withhold my number when I make calls (and yes they are 2 different things). I would never advise anyone on the same set up as me to revert because I pretty much never ever get any cold or spam calling that seems to blight everyone else and I'm sure this is the reason - I'm not registered with TPS or anything. So either she remembers the 1470 (I didn't know about that and might try it at home and see if it works) or you always answer your phone.
