As above, I am running windows 10 on a Compaq laptop. Is there a free download for PP anywhere that anyone knows of? I only need it for a short while, I do not really want to buy an office type pack.

Just use OpenOffice Impress instead. It can import and export files which use Microsoft PowerPoint format:
