Hairdressing hierarchy

This week I decided to get my very fine, short hair tidied up. On Monday I went into one local hairdressers when there were no other clients and asked for a tidy-up and blow dry (pensioners' rate). On being told I could have it done for £39.50 by a "senior hair design director", I asked if there wasn't an ordinary qualified hairdresser who could do it for a bit less. There wasn't so I turned the offer down as it was outwith my budget.
I then had it done in another "salon" where prices ranged from £31 to £54. After 30 minutes work, I was pleased with my £31 cut and blow dry. However, when I paid the stylist told me that if she did my hair again it would cost more as she is actually a "creation director". My husband doesn't have much more hair than me and pays £6 - so next time it will be the barber for me.

my usual salon everything from 'stylists ' to design consultants and creative directors so a cut and colour can be as low as £55 and as high as about £130 started going into one of those turn up and wait salons in the city... reasonable results about £30 inc tip for a cut wash and finish and I do my own colours

As far as I'm concerned, hairdressers have mostly priced themselves out of the market. I also do my own colours and go for a cut MUCH less frequently than I would have done at one time.

I have a young man with multicoloured hair who now comes to my house and cuts my hair for a tenner - I stopped affording the hairdressers' salon a long time ago.

"creation director"? ha ha...is that what they call themselves now? Can't wait to ring my lovely mobile hairdresser and call her that...she'll pop in & do a cut for about £8 if I have it washed and ready (I dry it myself too). Colour & cut is about £35.

I have an ex hairdresser come round and cut mine for a tenner and I colour it myself. I haven't been to a salon in years and judging by the charges I doubt I'll be going back any day soon.

My "creation director " charges £11 for a cut wash and blow dry .£21 for low lights including the cut wash and dry . Tea ,coffee or chocolate and a dip in the biscuit tin .
Local salon ,few minutes walk .Lovely girl who does exactly what I ask for .
I've also paid mega bucks for the same result that I get from her .If she ever leaves I'll cry :)
Some of these salons are a rip off.

Grow your hair then and get your money's worth, or stop going if you are unhappy with what you are paying. Or get some mobile hairdresser who will come to you.

In view of the medical treatment I am receiving I feel fortunate to have my short hair Purple Popple. Growing it would not be a solution.

Or get a mobile hairdresser, alot of them will do special discounts for seniors.

I desperately needed a trim earlier in the year as I'd not had it cut for over a year and the ends were so dry and scratty with split ends. I couldn't afford most of the city places then discovered a place in an out of town market, no frills wash, cut and blowdry for £13, dry cut was only £11 and she straightened it first! Fine for a good trim and would definitely use it there to keep it tidy.

You could try a Hairdressing School, they are a bit slow so you would have to allow more time, and unfortunately you do take a chance on the cut, but it is considerably cheaper and the colour is usually very good. They are watched over by a supervisor most of the time.

I have always absolutely hated going to the hairdressers. Cant stand all the boring small talk and they very rarely do as asked no matter how much you pay. I always look for one who will come to the house, cut it and go leaving me to do the rest and luckily I now have the best one ever. A lovely girl and whats more we have a proper chat as opposed to the usual embarrassing rubbish.

i never have it blow dried at the HD, because i always think you need to wash it after anyway cause of all the itchy bits!
Mine costs 16 for a wet cut (if you have it washed) or £12 if you just have it sprayed with water first

And why does a new hairdresser always ask you where you are going on holiday ?? As if she/he cares ?? Just small talk, I know. I would rather keep quiet and relax !
