I temped for a while when I was between jobs. I found my experiences to be good and I was given a variety of jobs from small offices where the enjoyment of the job was very reliant on your fellow workers, to larger organisations. In the larger organisations, you tend to work longer stints as these companies seem to have a policy of employing temps and them taking them on permanently. Both of my long term office employments, came from starting as a temp in the place. As Lady p gold says if you don't like it, it is easy to leave, although you don't want to do this too often as you will get a bad reputation! Also there is a very good chance that if you do well in your temp job, they will offer you a permanent job either in the same position or another one as they have had a chance to see what kind of employee you are. if you are not offered a permanent job, but are a good reliable worker you will be offered a lot of temp jobs as you will be considered an asset to your temping agency and they will want to protect you by giving you good assignments. I would definately say to give it a go!
