3 Cylinder engines

Hi,

Would a car with a 3 cylinder engine be suitable for motorway driving? (50 miles per day 16 times a month + leisure)

Please advise

why not? as long as its serviced properly and oil and water checked every so often any car can handle it

so long as a car is in good mechanical order and serviced, then why shouldnt it go be motorway ?

As long as the car will do mim. motorway speeds 50-60mph and has an MOT it should be ok.

hi, no probs at all, my daughter has a 3 cylinder 1ltr corsa and does just under 60 miles on the motorway each day, she is also out most nights, once again on the motorway with no probs staying within the speed limits (or so she tells me), she does however have her car serviced every 2000 miles just for her own piece of mind, hope this helps, all the best john.

It would probably be an advantage if you don't mind dicing with trucks as my wife did in her 250 mile journeys on the motorway in her Fiat 500 because you could have the last laugh as you would be doing about 60 mpg if you cruised around 50 mph!

I have regularly driven a Suzuki Swift 1.0 3 cylinder from London to Plymouth. Its good for 70mph with ease.

Just out of interest, Triumph sell a Motorcycle with three cylinders. It is 2.3 litre and will beat anything on the road up to 60mph and would cruise at 100 all day on the motorways!

Perhaps you would like one of those.

Yes, but I think the advantages of the 3 cylinder engine is really for town driving, so you're really gonna cane your fuel economy on a 3 cylinder engined car.

Maybe you're better of with a 4 cyclinder car....

Personally I wouldn't wanna be cruising along a busy motorway with a car that's gonna be wheezing along rather than breezing along.

You have a few choices - Corsa 1.0 12 valve, Daihatsu Charade, and I believe the Perodua Nipper.

On the flat - fine - cracking on the motorway economy wise - can be noisy at higher revs/speeds.

The engine's are pretty robust, although the corsa is a little underpowered.

The Daihatsu is my choice - what do you have out of interest?

I have just ordered a Citroen C1 which has a Toyota 1 litre 3 cylinder engine and I am asured that it will cruise at 80 with ease, and after a test drive i feel sure it will.
