Drillina and hanging a curtain on plasterboard wall

I had work done on my house a couple of years ago - an internal wall was moved and RSJ's put in etc - my front door was moved into an existing porch however I would like to hang a curtain over the door for winter months buthow can I tell where it is possible to drill into bearing in mind the weight of a curtain - there is a plasterboard wall above the door fram and to one side of it - thanks

Why can't you just attach the curtain rail to the door suround (architrave)? This was commonly done in the past.
Or, if the plasterboard is attached to the wall using wooden battens, use a metal/stud detector. This will show the position of the nails or screws in the plasterboard, or the battens themselves. Mark where they are. Attach a suitable wooden plank to the wall above the door, making sure you put the fixing screws through the plasterboard into the battens. Then attach the curtain rail to the plank.

Thanks - the door surround iand door are sPVC. There would not be enough clearance as the door is in llike a recess - perhaps the stud detector would word- I was not aware of a tool like this - i assume i could get this in a diy shop

Re Stud/Metal Detector - yes, you can buy them in DIY shops, here's a link to a few typical ones

I would recommend the better quality ones that can also trace non-ferrous pipes (eg copper water pipes) as well. Worth their weight in gold - errr, personal experience of having drilled through a water pipe talking here :-(
