Moving Bamboo

I have a massive bamboo bush that is about 15 years old. Last year I tried to move some to the other side of the garden. I just dug up some chunks and replanted them. All but one ( which is actually doing quite well ) died ! has anyone any suggestions that will improve the chances of success ?
