Help Understanding Diabetes Medications

Do Metformin, Alogliptin and Gliclazide all do the same thing or do they work in different ways?

I have been on Metformin since before my diagnosis of Diabetes, Alogliptin for a couple of years and this morning I was given a prescription for Gliclazide. I asked the doctor why the need for three drugs but I ended up being more confused.

I'm off for a nap with my little boy cat - but I will return.

In simple terms they are used to control the blood sugar levels in Type 2 diabetics and are basically the same.
That is all you need to know.

That triple regime is standard practice for Type 2 Diabetics.

Thanks. My doctor informed me that I have type three or secondary diabetes. Is this just new fangled thinking of legit?

Started with polycystic ovaries.

When i was first diagnosed in Oct '09, i was given Gliclazide by the hospital. About a month later, when seeing my doctor for the first time since the diagnosis, he questioned the prescription of that one and changed it to Metformin, saying, "This'll help you lose the weight." Perhaps Metformin is of more use for those with a few extra tyres - i was 18 and a half stone at the time!

It is legit to the modern medical fraternity, but new fangled to sqad.
In fairness, PCOS is associated with Type 2 Diabetes with high levels of Insulin in the blood. problem is that certain cells do not respond to the Insulin which seems to be doing *** all. So it is a different kind of Diabetes.......so they say.

Ken - I am about 18 stone, for a five foot four female this is not good. I have been up to 22 stone but managed to lose some a few years back, but weight and old age (55yrs) are making my joints scream in pain.

I am so tired (brain and body) all the time but I am on a 'few' medications that may be causing this as a side effect. The GP that see for the Diabetes and the Lithium clinics is not my normal GP and she is just too nice and sympathetic. She is also not very good at giving a straight answer to a straight question.

Sqad - thanks for your help. I know that my diet is not what you would call 'balanced' and I eat at irregular intervals. I have a foggy brain at present so on my next 'good brain day' I will work out a better eating plan.

I now have a cat to give drugs to, it is a dangerous task.
