My uncle died in WW2. Not married; no children. He had 3 sisters and 2 brothers. His last surviving sibling died recently. Who is next of kin? The oldest nephew/neice? Or the oldest child of his recently deceased sibling? TIA.

Thanks NJ. The MOD do ask who is next of kin, as they did when I applied for my dads' service record. A few of the options to choose from were: nephew of the full blood: nephew of the half blood etc. Why they need to be so specific for a war medal from 80 years ago is beyond me. It's not as though I couldn't buy one from somewhere, like a shop called Aaward, which sells all service medals. But I felt it should come from the govt, as my uncle died for this country.
Hi Clarion, I thought you used to live near the parcel delivery office for some reason .. ( where you collect if you've missed a parcel)

Eleena, we used to live on Clarion St, just off Livesey St, near St. Patricks' church. As mentioned earlier, the part of Clarion St where we used to live is still there and shows up on Google Earth, although there are no buildings on the street now.
The MOD has an application form for veterans, and their families to apply for military campaign medals.

It says,

"Part 2a: Applying on behalf of a Deceased Veteran/ Serviceperson
You must be the official Next of Kin (NoK) in order to apply The Official NoK is the first person from the following list who is still alive. Please tick the relevant box (This order is based on Intestacy Law)"

For the MOD, it uses the order as per intestacy law.
