Community self builds
5 Answers
After feeling quite depressed thinking I would never get on to the property ladder (and be living with my Mum forever!), I came accross a magazine artical about 'community self builds' where - correct me if I'm wrong - you form a group of 6-15 people and approach your local authorities for funding to build your own homes. You get to do all of the manual work yourselves and part own the property on completion. Does anyone know any more about this? Cheers.

This seems to be about extending the existing shared equity ownership schemes (Social Homebuy etc.) to schemes established by groups of self-builders. As with any self-build scheme, the greatest hassle is finding and acquiring the land. Government seems really keen on helping those who can't get on the bottom of the property ladder through shared equity, and the practical help it can provide with land involves re-using brownfield sites in public ownership (redundant hospital sites etc.). Some of this land (that would otherwise be developed through Housing Associations) is being diverted for self-builders to use. Don't underestimate the amount of work involved in self-build, but good luck.
Here's a quote from the FAQ's page of that CSBA website:
"The Agency has a database of those interested in self build who might want to join forces with you."
So try contacting CSBA. I suggest phoning, rather than writing or sending email, because you might get put through to someone with whom you can discuss your interest and possible involvement:
