Shops are acting all prestigious because they now use american style brown paper bags but the reality of the situation is they tried to charge 5P per bag thinking it would solve issues and make them money but it did nothing for the environment.
Finally shops are making these tiny changes that will have massive impacts...
I do not see why responsibilities such as plastic is put onto the consumer.. The shops are nation wide.. have a load of money and are responsible. They should ALL use paper bags (preferably hemp!) and less plastic packaging.
It is a joke who is in charge of this? Ahh Michael Gove.
When I was young paper carrier bags were all you could get. They cost 2d, just under 1p. No good in the rain, though - your groceries ended up on the pavement with the eggs all smashed.
I do not see how plastic bags are evolutionary at all. People will still have the bags they've collected over the years for those rainy days, or if they remember to take them to the shop if we implemented paper bags across the nation, but i am fed up of having to get MORE plastic if i forget my bag. A paper option needs to be available.
I've took my hoodie off before, tied the arms to the hood and used it as a homeless sack type of thing
I think overall it is a step forward using paper bags until the tree huggers come about and realise we can't save the ocean life with all the plastic pellets etc...
Myself use a sports bag to carry groceries and have a few bags for life (Tesco) I frequent there often but are guilty of collecting carriers when going to local shop.
That's also why i suggested hemp bags. It can be grown, cultivated and turned into fibres with less time, water, energy and land that a tree would require.
