Can't Get Iphone To Backup To Itunes On Laptop

I regularly backup my phone (using itunes) to my laptop via a cable.
However it isn't working at the minute. I am able to synchronise. but it says that backup fails.
I have restarted both the laptop and my iphone. What else could I try?

Yes I had googled and spotted that Buenchico. I think I have done all those suggestions.
Sycamore I want to be able to back up to my laptop, not the cloud thanks.

Might I need to click on Restore Backup? It looks like this will go back to the last time I backed up (10th April) so does this mean that I would lose pictures, messages etc since that date?
