The clue giving the 'N' is -

Aspirin(g) - giving the 'N'

I'm inclined to think that 'n(ame)' for 's(omeone; principally)' leads to 'loNer' from 'loSer' but the definition isn't there - unless 'loner' is "name for someone" & the clue is trying to be too clever? I think my brain is frazzled in this heat...

If loner is correct then it is a poor clue IMO.

I'm so glad I am among many very experienced quizzers----
who feel this is a poor clue. I think it is "loner" but that is not necessarily a failure. Can't be anything else ? But thank you, anyway.
