Sonic Defender

I read about a Ship that used a sonic weapon to repel pirates fairly recently. It was a civilian ship and managed to pull away from the pirates who were in Powerboats.

How would a sonic weapon work? I remember one in the " Calculus Affair" - have they made one that works?
