Does anyone know if the folks over 75 who are currently lucky enough not to have to pay for their TV licences, will have that privilege taken away from them in 2020? My mother in law, for example, is 89 and doesn't have to pay for hers currently - will she have to pay after the cut off date in 2020? And what about people who are 75 between now and whatever date in 2020, will they still be able to apply for a free licence - and would they have it taken away again after the cut-off date. It's as clear as mud to me ....
I can see a case for payments for the licence to be based on amount of use or on ability to pay but I don't think age by itself should be a factor or the amount of tax/NI one has paid previously.
Basing things on age seems arbitrary to me and patronising. I'm not sure why a friend who has turned 60 gets free travel in London (and free prescriptions) when he earns a six figure salary and a million pound house- bonkers
