That's not an odd saying. The island of Ireland.

Dunno, something I've never gave a thought to but island has a silent *s* if that helps :0)
I think it's just done for clarification. If someone said "Ireland" it wouldn't be obvious whether they meant the whole island or just the Irish Republic.
