Lead Reactive Shihtzu

My 4 year old is so good and friendly with other dogs when he is off the lead. However, when he is on the lead and meets most other dogs who are also on the lead, he snarls, barks, lunges and pulls. He gives the impression of being a really aggressive, nasty dog. My husband will not pay for therapy as he believes it is a waste of time. Will medication help? We are close to getting rid of him, but we love him, we don't want to. We are desperate.

Have you got insurance? They may pay for behavioural training if a vet agrees. Drugs without treatment won't deal with it I am afraid. Can I suggest that you start by talking to your vet? btw therapy for dogs as in behavioural therapy is different from some "therapies" for humans. Behavioral Therapy for dogs teaches the owner how to manage the dog so that it's fear, which is what causes the reactivity, isn't triggered and teaches the owner how to teach the dog to do things instead of reacting.

As soon as you see another dog on a lead getting near, distract your dog before he starts playing up. Use either a high value treat, a favourite toy, or a clicker and when he looks at you makes fuss of him until the other dog has passed. His behaviour should gradually get better but you have to keep it up.

Why would you get rid of him? That's a bit drastic.

Avoid going too near to other dogs and keep your eyes open for any that may be coming up behind. As LB says, distract your dog with a sit command and a treat until the other dog has passed by. Praise your dog for its good behaviour.
