Nostalgia - Not Just A Thing Of The Past
11 Answers
Channel hopping on Netflix last night when i came across an hour long compilation episode of 'The Comedians' from about a million years ago. Found many of them - particularly Bernard Manning - quite unamusing but as soon as i saw Ken Goodwyn i began to chuckle. And when he began telling his jokes, the chuckle turned to full on laughter. Wasn't his jokes as much as his delivery. Only watched about 20 mins of it so i'll probably watch the remainder tomorrow when i need the smile putting back on my face after my horses have been sold to the guy on Blackpool beach.

The trouble with Bernard was that when you had seen him once, that was it. Every time it was the same, with the occasional topical joke thrown in. Having said that, Manning raised lots of money for charity and did private performances for prominent people. I know this from being a member of a certain club in Blackley, Manchester, where Bernard was also a member. Not his own club, which is still operating on Rochdale Rd. in Harpurhey. If any newcomers to clubland asked for advice, he would always tell them the same thning: Make sure you pay your taxes! he didn't care about anyone who disliked him. To him, it was living that he was good at. And he was. Some of you are now going to quote the Mrs Merton thing. That did him no harm whatsoever. He was still as popular after it, as before it.
10C; I said he wasn't very funny in the bits that i saw, not that he wasn't funny at all. I used to watch his tv show from his club in Manchester and i don't mind comedians who dare to tell jokes about taboo subjects. As for him being the best, we'll have to agree to disagree.
Albaqwerty; Ta for that, daft as a brush but much funnier than many of today's stand-ups.
