Having just bought one I am beginning to think so.
I've had two trouble-free ones. Admittedly one of them was only trouble-free until I dropped it after about 2 years' use.
I refer you to an earlier post of mine. This issue only arose when I got an HP laptop.

I'm using a 17" HP Satellite that is years old, never had a problem with it.
I have a HP. Had it for years. It needed a new battery but any other faults are what we've inflicted on it.

It occasionally does the updates thing but not without warning.
Picked up a HP Spectre 360 last year for a bargain price just couldn’t resist. It came with one or two niggles like refusing to stay connected to the wifi, constantly doing things in the background and hiding what it was doing you also have to make one or two compromises with it but once sorted it fly’s. Like most manufactures you get good’uns and bad’uns Ive never heard of any manufacture getting gold stars every time
I've had a few HP laptops and been very pleased with all of them. My friend has had one and had nothing but problems.
yes, i bought one for 700 quid a few years ago, after a while it went wrong, after a lengthy court battle i got my money back.
My first laptop was an HP, bought back around 2000 – had no major problems. If I dug it out, I suspect it might still work.

My current works laptop is an HP, over 4 years old and the battery will last from the start of the working day until around 3pm if I forget to switch the mains adapter on.
My Lenovo could not do that when new.
had a hp dv pavilion i7 for yrs only had to dismantle and put in new thermal grease cpu heatsink, still running now..like new
