Green Goddess
You never see a fire engine that's more than a few years old, and in perfect condition, so what happens to the older vehicles?
Would it not make sense to let the army have the old ones so they can upgrade from their 40 year old jalopies so they could be a more effective service during times of strikes, emergencies, etc.?
thanks

They did have similar ones, but they were red.

Fire engines are sold to commercial companies - huge factories, airports and so on, as well as other countries.

Ethel, although the British Army may not use them on a day-to-day basis, the Green Goddess' are kept in storage in times of emergencies and are manned by any MOD service personnel which will include the Royal Navy, RAF, British Army and MOD civilian fire service.
The last time they were used was in 2003 I think. I know the Gulf War 2 was going on and yet the base I worked out were then even more short staffed because of the manning of the engines (RAF). A local army base also manned some engines.
I believe they're starting to sell some of the Green Goddess' off now?

Operation Fresco is, even now, an ongoing operation by the MoD. Op Fresco provides firefighting crews from the Tri-Services (Naval Service, British Army, RAF) at times of industrial strike by civillian firefighters. The Green Godess (yellow in Northern Ireland) shows no sign of being retired. The reason they are still used is because they have 4 wheel drive, which civillian appliances don't have. They are being supplemented with the more modern Red Godess.
What irks forces personnel employed on Op Fresco is having to carry out the in-country jobs of civillians who believe they are underpaid by the government. They ought to try fighting (fire and combat) in Basra for less money. At least firefighters are allowed to join a union where they can dispute and strike. Unions and strikes are illegal in the armed forces.

Fire Fighters in the Army are now allowed to use the Normal Fire Bridgades. It has come that the last Strike in 2004 or 05 was a huge dis-order that they had to allow the Army to use them
The Goverment do sell of old Fire Bridgades to Commercial companies and many are now transformed to Limo Hire and Mini Buses. Or Strip Clubs on Wheels. The goverment do need to revert to what they do and put there servants before, money.
