If I have any left over meat or fish I put it on a plate and leave it outside on the patio for visiting cats. I'd done this about an hour ago. I just opened the door to see if any had gone and discovered about 20 of the fattest slugs I have ever seen, all tucking in. Honestly some were an inch thick. I can't stand the things. OH put some slug pellets out. I can't do it as I cant kill anything no matter how gross they are.
Where do they live during the day as I've never seen any?
I am confused. In that report on slugs it says they live underground. My patio has a wall around it so there is nowhere for the slugs to live underground.
Do they have a sense of smell that would attract them over quite a high wall?
Some quite interesting facts, there, Sam.
Basically a slug is just a homeless snail. Awww:-)
Only 5% of the slug population is above ground at any one time. The other 95% is in Blackburn, digesting your children, smoking dope and laying rotten eggs.
Slugs are hermaphrodite. So, if you told one to go and **** itself, it probably would.
As I see it, slugs are all part of the eco system and are an important food for hedgehogs.
I would never use slug pellets, it so often gets eaten by cats and dogs and makes them very ill., crunched up egg shells protect vulnerable plants from slugs and snails just as well.
Egg shells don't do that good a job. Better used to add calcium long term to the soil.
I've used nematodes to reduce the slug population. Trouble is snails don't go underground. Don't see a hedgehog in my garden, otherwise they could have a feast every year.
