it will depend on where you were caught. if you were in a 30 miles an hour zone, it will definately be an immediate ban

I'm afraid 116 even on a motorway is pretty much an automatic ban. The magistrate will have a degree of say in what you get, but I think they would be criticised for not having your licence for a spell. Best case probably a month, but potentially 3 months. If you could argue that you need your licence for work etc.. and you are going to lose your job etc (A letter from your employer may assist) but any reduction in your ban will be reflected in the increase of your fine. It's impossible to assess what that might be because it will be means tested... but I'm reckioning that if you can afford to drive the M3 around at that speed you may get hammered in that area as well! I think 70 is a crazy limit these days. Vehicles have changed dramatically since these limits were set and modern braking systems are up to the job. Your car is almost certainly safe at that speed and if it was clear, dry etc then who knows. Sadly it may well all depend on how much the police have 'put the pen into you' in their reports and even more worryingly the mood of the magistrate on the day. A bit silly perhaps, but I wish you luck.

116mph gets driven at every day on UK motorways - in the appropriate traffic conditions I consider it safe and as you correctly say, you are using your full attention and become, if anything, safer than the lorries pulling out right in front of people, the drivers cutting in to exit with metres to spare, the idiots that don't return to the left lane as soon as thier overtaking is complete (biggest cause of motorway congestion and concertina-effect shunts). If it was a brief burst of speed on a quite road, consider yourself unlucky.

As far as a ban is concerned, you could get out on hardship if your employer (if they are funding your training) would suffer considerably. As stated, losing your job is not usually enough. You have to show that your employers and others would aslo be affected.

I would agree with some of the other comments regarding piloting though. A cool head is definately required - make sure you have one!
