UK to USA new rules for flying
Ok, I admit this ban about taking a handbag on a plane is seriously going to mess with my head and all my female friends. I am aware that you cannot take drinks, or toothpaste, or ipods, or a laptop on the plane as hand luggage. My question is can you take from UK to USA perfume and oils and toothpaste etc IF it is packed in a suitcase that is checked in, or can you NOT take these things at all? Just bought my friend some expensive perfume as a present. She is flying here for a holiday and I want her to take the present home with her (in her suitcase) would she be allowed to do so? I think the USA have more stringent rules than we have and there seems to be a grey area regarding what you can take but no longer as cabin luggage and what you can not take at all, no-matter, no-how - irrespective of where its packed and carried. Anybody know?

As a commercial pilot operating in the current atmosphere (no pun intended), I've found, within the last few days, that almost everything (I'm in the U.S.) that could previously be taken can still be taken as long as it's in your checked baggage. It's best not to have anything in tubes or sealed containers, including men's shave creams or any hairsprays, including non-pressurized ones and other similar items in your handbags or other carry-ons... you'll have to deposit them in the 50 gallon wastebasket at the security check areal. (What are they going to do with all that stuff?) One item that is not allowed in carry on that is a real concern for travelers since they can't very well dispose of them at the security station is their remote car starting "fobs". These and other such normally inane devices are suspect as detonators. There's even been some discussion of banning electronic wrist watches... that hasn't happened yet...Try to pack with as little carry on as possible... purses are okay, but don't take any tubes of lipstick... Safe travels!
After 9/11 there was total confusion among airlines and airports about what you could and couldn't carry, and restrictions changed by the hour. I mentioned to a security guy at an airport that I'd read that you could kill someone with a Bic biro. He agreed, and said that they were finding it impossible to draw a firm line between items classed as dangerous and those that were deemed to be safe. Here we are again. Fly naked?
Seems perfume in a suitcase would be ok then. My friend will die without her handbag or - worse still - without her lipstick, but it is better to be safe than sorry.
I see the sense (possibly) about banning electronic wrist watches but that would seriously give me a problem as I am deaf and wear a vibrating watch as its the only thing that wakes me up as I don't hear any form of alarm and sleep through any light. A ban like that would really hurt disabled people so I hope the airlines don't go to those lengths.
Clanad - in the job you do you have my sympathy right now as it must be extra stressful for you. Heathfield, I like the idea of fly naked as it puts ogling men and their dangly bits into a whole new perspective for us females!
