I admire her courage and fortitude, but do you think that this is a waste of a place at medical school?

Would you be happy to be examined and diagnosed by a blind and almost totally deaf doctor ?

I certainly wouldn't.

The heading is a bit misleading as she is still a medical student.

I tried to make an appointment with her, but she said she couldn't see me.

So have I (Two). I still misunderstand what people say to me, especially in a noisy environment, I hope she will be able to hear the answer to 'where does it hurt?' especially from one who is screaming in agony.
> When I saw the heading, 'Blind Doctor', I thought it was referring to a window blind repairer.

As in ...

In my experience, most GPs are deaf to what their patients say.
On her first day working on the ward, a doctor asked Alexandra Adams why she was walking around with a patient's cane.

After explaining it was actually hers, the deaf and blind medical student was told not to touch any patients – then sent home.

She heard was was said to her then.^
It seems just about everyone connected to this young lady’s training is more than happy with her so I’m happy with her too. Good luck to her.
// Looks like your 'humorous' post is being ignored Ludwig - best thing for it really, everyone can get on with the discussion and not get sidetracked by your sledgehammer wit. //

On the contrary, it looks like it got awarded best answer. It wasn't actually intended to be funny though - it was intended purely to irritate any sanctimonious twits that might be looking in, and it seems to have worked a treat.
It made me chuckle Ludwig. I love a good pun
I'm deaf and wear glasses and have a speech impediment and can hardly feel my way in this world as it is. No I wouldn't have faith in her either. My nurses take minutes to find a vein in my arm to get blood - imagine the lady trying to get blood from me - I wouldn't have an arm left.
From the article...

//'It has always been that if someone told me I couldn't do something, I would go out of my way to prove I could,' she said. 'I can do cannulation, take blood, catheterise [and] spot rashes.'//

If she fails in the rest of her training I am sure she won't be alone (others may fail for very different reasons) but for now things are progressing well.
Lynne this is one of the statements I have difficulty with 'I can do cannulation, take blood, catheterise [and] spot rashes.' How can somebody perform these task's safely and single handedly with 5% sight in one eye?
well she probably "feels" for things like needles (they prick youLOL) veins (they're supposed to stick up) - just like Helen Keller felt her way round everything so there is a supposition of that I suppose.
I can't answer for her Tony, nor would I attempt to but I can think of no reason for her to lie - like all others who are training up to be part of Medicine I hope the best get through.
I agree with Sqad that she is taking up a space in medical school where a normal student should be.
