Adding Memory To A Pc.

I have a six year old PC which is still working well but I would like to add another 4gb RAM.
I am not an expert but with the aid of You Tube feel able to fit a memory pack into a slot.

My current spec is: Intel(R) Core (TM). i5-3340 cpu @ 3.10 HHz (3.30GHz.
Installed Memory: (RAM) 4GB 500 GB. System Type: 64 Bit.
Windows 7 Professional.
It is used for general home use with a medium photo collection. I'm not into gaming and
I still have about 50% memory remaining, but I'd like to know if adding memory would improve the machine in any way and if it be worth it. In this situation and with this spec what would you do ?

Some sellers will check your pc for you. Places I've bought from in the past are Crucial and MrMemory. Try their sites, download the software to check your system. It'd be helpful.

Adding additional system ram is about the cheapest way of improving performance. But, bearing in mind your still running W7 Pro benefits might be a bit late in the day. Probably a better upgrade would be to move to W10. If you did then 4Gb system ram would be adequate.

You also need to check how your 4GB current memory is made up; in other words, have you any free slots? Installing memory is easy - you just plug it in and the computer recognises it with no effort from you. I've always used Crucial and they have a program which will tell you exactly what memory to buy for your PC.

I improved my desktop immensely by putting in a 2TB hybrid hard drive. Faster and quiet, no boot lag and dead easy to install. You can even "clone" your old hard drive so that you keep all your files and setting. It was so successful that I did the same with an 8 year old laptop. I am running w10 with the Edge Beta browser on both and am more than satisfied that I will get years of use from both.

As long as the hardware is up to date, you can upgrade a Windows 7 machine to Windows 10 free of charge. Simply download and run Belarc Advisor ( https://www.belarc.com/products_belarc_advisor ). Note down the Windows 7 licence key. (It's five groups of five characters). Follow the 'upgrade' instructions here

and, when you're asked for a Windows 10 product key, simply enter the Windows 7 one instead.

The Crucial scan shows that I have 2 slots, one with 4GB and the other is empty. The recommendation is for a DDR3 DIMM whatever that means, and I will need another 4GB for the empty slot lifting me to 8GB. Can anyone please point me in the right direction in Amazon ?

The Crucial info doesn't seem to show a single 4GM memory pack
( some 2x2s) and I don't want to pay out for an 8GB one, simply need to plug in another 4GB alongside the existing. Perhaps I'm missing something. What I need, please, is one that meets the spec, either from Crucial or Amazon as long as it does the job.

Your Crucial scan will have included the speed of the memory you have installed, shown as "xxxxMHz" - you need to ensure that you get *the same rating* on the new memory.
