Dirt & Quad Bikes On The Road

Just wondering if there are any kind of regulations about the use of what look like off road dirt bikes on the public highway (residential area).

They seem to be the in thing around my way at the moment, riding them round and round, in circuits it sounds like, and they are so loud, especially when they rev them up when screeching up to stop and turn. Saw what looked like a couple of kids on one recently but was a little too far away to be sure.

Also seen a couple of people on a quad bike riding round the roads.

I'm just interested if there are any regulations on them.

As long as they are 'street legal'( and not all are) the regulations are the same as for a motor bike, licence, tax, insurance, MOT and a crash helmet are needed to ride them on the road.

Thank Eddie, I thought maybe that was the case.

I'm not sure DrF, will have a check next time I see any of them. I mainly here them as they are so loud and just seem to ride round and round and round the streets. There must be tracks available for them somewhere around here.

No need to wear a crash helmet on a quad, but it is recommended.
You need a full car licence to ride them on the road, or a Cat B1 if issued before Jan 1997.

Thanks Graham. I was surprised to see that, I know they look pretty sturdy and I've been on one, off road though, but if you get thrown off one in a crash or even in a the crash impact itself, it's not going to help not having a helmet!

I stand corrected on crash helmets, I always thought they were compulsory as with motor bikes.

Interesting to see that they must have both front and rear number plates as most only seem to have rear.
