I went to my riding lesson today and found out that the horse I ride Big George had to be euthanasised .
It’s come as a shock I knew that he had a form of cancer but it’s one that a horse can live with.
Apparently it started affecting his genitalia so they decided the time had come.
He was cremated and his ashes laid on the hill overlooking the school, I always take an apple for him for after the lesson so I took that up to him and laid it at his stone.
Sorry I know you are probably not interested but I needed to get it off my chest.

Aunt polly I will look for a horse of my own but now is not the right time.
I have been offered a loaner and am considering it but probably not till the new year, I’ve only just started riding again after my accident so need to get over a few issues first
Although the riding school I attended always pointed out in the fields where the horses has been buried (if we rode that way) they also put up plaques in the stables as a nearer reminder of their horses. Would you be able to do soething like that? If you wanted to of course.
That's sad RR, George became part of your journey and I'm sure he was very special to many.x
The horse I always rode was put down and the yard owner told me when I rang to book a lesson. So sad, I loved him and like to think he was quite fond of me too. Animals really leave hoofprints/pawprints on our hearts don't they?
So sorry to read this RR - that would have been a shock to find out on the morning of your lesson ((HUGS ))

Thank you Ducksie, I will fondly remember him as he was there when I needed him to be patient.
As an aside - & I hope you don't mind, RR - if I had a "bucket list", riding a horse would be on it. I've never had the opportunity, but have always quite fancied giving it a go. The ex Mrs L-i K was quite proficient, having grown up with the opportunity to ride & the stories of "her" horses always touched me. :-)
Was he the one you fell off?

I don't know much (almost nothing) about horses but they seem to be cheeky and have strong characters.

Very sad, but if you rode him only a few days ago he was not suffering for long if at all. My horse Strongbow was 35 when I lost him, having had him since he was 5, so a very big part of my life. Over the last year he went down in the field and had to be got up by the fire brigade using straps as he was built like the proverbial brick *** house but the next time it happened he was in the stable and did not try to get up so we knew it was time to let him go. He was a gentle giant, you could sit underneath him grooming his belly! He was such a character, and taught many youngsters to ride including doing a stint with riding for the disabled, and he used to sort of spread his legs and lower his back when they were getting on him. Its quite a few years now since I lost him but your post has brought back lots of memories and a few tears. Remember all the good times you shared.

Wolf yup Big G was the one I came off of, lol such a git I am sure he was planning on how to do it again.
Lankeela it was 9 days since I last rode him - so whilst I knew he had this form of cancer the speed that he went down hill has surprised me.
LIK - you should give it a go xx
Rr my sympathies are with you. xx
