The Manchester tart as we know it in our area is a pastry case spread with jam and filled with a custard then sprinkled with coconut and glace cherries.

Seems I've looked for the wrong cake, I thought he said Russian Sandwich cake.

Mamya he said he was told it was called that but he wasn't sure, but by the way he described it, I thought it sounded like the Manchester Tart Cake. Anyway, looks like we'll never know. :-) x

This is how he described it.
Aunt Polly, it's a sponge cake with custard filling. Like that in Custard slices. The only place I know that sells them is Oldham Market. And you have to be quick!

Almost gagged when I saw that pic. Manchester Tart at school was revolting. Makes me shudder to think of it.

Agree with Mamya - 10Clarionst was talking about a Russian Sandwich. Sponge cake filled with custard, white icing in top and a sprinkle of coconut round the edges of the icing. Mr BD used to make them by the dozen. Very popular. Used to bring meone home every week. Not seen one for years but then we never buy cakes.

The Manchester tart we were served at school didn’t have any coconut near it, I hate coconut and always have but loved Manchester tart.
