I bought a puzzler magazine today. Did a quiz type crossword. I think they made a mistake. Clue. Which former southern English country ( yes that's what was printed) had Winchester as its countytown?
I thought the answer was Wessex. The magazine says Sussex. Am I right?

Cartainly not Sussex I'm sure. Now it's Hampshire - I thought Wessex was just an invention of Thomas Hardy.
Ooops. Looks like it may be correct after all - but kingdom of Wessex, not country.

There was a Kingdom of Sussex also, but its capital was Chichester

Sussex is not a former county, but Wessex is.
Sussex is a former county but was then split into two counties East Sussex and West Sussex. When I was at school there was only ONE Sussex, not East and West!

Both Sussex and Wessex were also former "kingdoms".

"West Sussex is the western part of the historic county of Sussex, formerly a medieval kingdom"
