four days a week, as suggested by the Labour party, I know some like myself are retired, but how would it work in practice.

Not practical at all - it just won’t work.

I deal with US lawyers a lot, and they are a demanding bunch, so I can just see how that would go down with them! Fact is, if it did come to pass, people in the ‘professions’ and other occupations where time is of the essence and people are used to, and expect to, only deal with an individual, the working patterns for them won’t change.

May work for shop floor widget makers, although as previously mentioned the employer won’t like it having to employ more people, and the consumer won’t like having to pay more for their widget.

The is just another I’ll-thought out idiotic idea to add to their other idiotic ideas like punishing the ‘rich’, free broadband, a gazillion trillion extra spending, and so on.

We’re still early in the campaign, so I wonder what other fanciful nonsense will appear from them between now and the election.

its not the same but i work a 9 day fortnight. it's equivalent to ft hours, you just do lightly longer days. i like it!

All well and good Hopkirk, but if you do become rich, and bear in mind Labour consider £80k to be rich, they will punish you with a large tax increase.

The current clowns in charge of Labour have a deep loathing of those who are 'rich'.

I always worked four days - worked Fridays and Sundays but took a weekend on Tuesday and Wednesday. I enjoyed it.

I used to work for Andrew Barnes in the brief time he was in London, invested with Andrew Barnes (on his advice), and lost a shed load of money because of Andrew Barnes.

Just a comment on the Emergency Services. Our local surgery nurses here do not work weekends and also have dates like Christmas Day and other Bank Holidays off. This was one of the reasons that the N.H.S. was on the negative side of the paper when we were trying to decide whether or not to move back to UK. There were other concerns.

Our little town in France had 5 nurses (worked independently as a group) and 2 of them were always available, Christmas Day included - we used to take mince pies, which they loved! None complained of overwork and they seemed to have plenty of holidays, so it is possible to arrange things so that cover is maintained. Not sure how many hours in total they worked, but when on duty it was a 12 hour shift.
