sounds odd but the reality is devastating, watching this beautiful place
get swamped seems unreal. According to the piece on the news yesterday it's mostly the fault of the corrupt politicians, bribery and general bad practice that has caused this catastrophe.

no he was right. ^^
bad weather isn't the fault of politicians: the measures taken to counter bad weather may be. I'm sure there are people in Italy denying that the climate is changing, just as there are here; and there's been flooding here too, don't forget.
I'm going back some time, probably 40 years or even more, but I remember John Julius Norwich (he of Round Britain Quiz fame) battling away and explaining that Venice was sinking and needed massive investment to avoid it disappearing completely beneath the waves. He made a TV programme on the same subject, I believe, and he was just going on observed facts over the 100 years or so before.
^^ I phrased that wrongly, he made a TV prog. on the subject which I remember watching, and compared the gradual rise in flood water rising marks on the buildings as well as quoting historical sources.
Is diddlydo really trying to blame the weather on the Government?

Honestly, idiocy knows no bounds with some.
Governments are to blame for insufficient investment in flood defences.
//sorry i just dont see the fuss about the place.//

Hundreds of years of history, Venice is a beautiful city and quite unique. Like nowhere else on earth – and if it’s possible that’s worth preserving – in my opinion.

so it is worth preserving
Sounds about right.

I think it was Oscar Wilde went there and sent a telegram to a friend saying 'Street flooded, please advise'.
