How do TV companies know when TV audiences drop for a certain show. How do they measure it?

They are estimated by asking a cross section of the viewing public and multi-plying their answeres.

Hi Eliades, I belonged to Barb for a few years. Each week you got a chart of each day with the Tv timings and you had to fill in what program you watched.
You had to fill in the chart within a certain period and you had to include everything including the local news programs.
There were also charts for Radio Programs

during live hows they seem to measure slightly different in that I'v eheard them saying that they use the national grid because at adverts and when programms end apparently thee's a huge surge of power with everyoje putting their kettle on
