Garage Door Garador Make, Cannot Open

I tried to open our up and over garage door today, it went up about a quarter and stuck. I went in the other door at the back of the garage to see if anything was in the way but no. It seemed to weigh a ton and when I finally got it to move to close it, it came down far too fast. I will have a look tomorrow in daylight, but does anyone have an idea what is causing this. I will check if the cable is broken when I can see, anything else to check?

Oh dear Bookbinder, thanks for that, it doesn’t sound good but there is nothing I can do until I see it properly tomorrow. Thanks for your answer anyway.

The wires that link the springs to the weights often break .. they are found in a long case above the door, on the inside of the garage.
They area bit of a brute to replace, I have replaced them in the past, but not a job I would look forward to.
