After a certain number of years service John Lewis gives employees 6 months paid holiday.
Imagine that. How can they afford that.

After 25 years yes.
They probably got the idea from Australia where long service leave has been the norm for decades.
John Lewis's staff own the company and, as a proportion of their entire workforce, there probably aren't that many people who complete the necessary 25 years of service required to qualify for 6 months paid leave.
JL have long been noted for their generosity to staff who are treated as shareholders rather than just employees.
