A complaint has been made that Eamonn Holmes used to word 'uppity' when describing the Duchess of Sussex episode at Wimbledon and now ITV have banned the word! Who knew it was racist? I didn't and obviously neither did Eamonn..
the word was used in England 200 years before it was used in America by somebody to describe a black person if Holmes had used it to describe a white person nobody would have complained. But he didn't.
From the article.
//According to sources at ITV, Holmes is now fully aware of the word’s meaning and has promised not to use it again. And the network has gone even further – banning the use of the word completely.//
So what would they do if Eamonn or anyone else uses the word, is it a punishable offence?
Having read the original article, I can see that ITV hadn't dealt with it at that time and so I think knowing how they have dealt with it, was worth an update.
I told my grandchild not to act uppity last week. I shall continue to use the word - as well as nitwit and ninnywaff, I'm putting those in just in case they are also offensive, so I can be defiant. :)
Yes, that's true Mamya.
Jackdaw Wow can't believe that was the entertainment on offer in 1963!
I never watched TWTWTW or B/W Minstrels, but it must have somehow been acceptable at the time, so thank goodness we've moved on, but I still think there are times now when things go OTT.
Barsel -TWTWTW was cutting edge and absolutely 'de rigeur' to watch. The B & W Minstrel show was getting a bit dated by then, but I always used to enjoy it (my parents watched it) - no nasty feeling about it, just good singing and costumes.
NellieMay, I'm sure a lot of people who do use this word will continue to do so, but I would like to know what ITV would do if Eamonn or anyone else were to use that word in future. Is it a punishable offence?
jourdain2 I do remember these programmes, but by 1963 I was only interested in Rock'n Roll so these programmes held no appeal for me. I do remember programmes like Love Thy Neighbour and probably laughed along with everyone else, and it's quite shocking what we classed as entertainment back then. Just checked up on Millicent Martin and she is still living, now in her eighties. I wonder what she would think now if she were to watch those clips?
Had he used it to describe someone who isn't of mixed race, I doubt anyone would have noticed. That's what all this silliness is about. Nothing like looking for offence.
