This is debatable I usually do mine in pencil and then fill it in ink. Some allow whiteout ..Lovatts for instance but I don't really know how you stand with the newspaper crosswords.
I think if it is legible it should be accepted .That is to say if it is a neat correction. But pencil first is the way to go !

ok well i have filled in most of it now so i may aswell finish it and put a second class stamp on it! Thanks
Steve - From the same page as your crossword cut out a slightly smaller paper square to lay over your error. You will need to be very precise - no wobbly cuts! Then apply the slightest trace of PrittStick to your fake square and position it exactly without touching the grid lines. A perfect match! This is a highly skilled surgical operation - the perfect crime and works every time. See you in jail . . .
Its so annoying when this happens agree with pencil , I usually photo-copy grid but still have make mistakes transfering I usually follow Johnalex method except use the white sticky name labels, can get hundreds for a pound in the poundshop and they have many other uses if the crossword is neat and reasonable and picked out should be given a prize if lots of alterations questionable, but it all depends on luck and getting picked from thousands its worth a try.
