Looks like it could be re-worked from another crossword. Is the answer to clue 12 a or 12d 'abstain' by any chance?

My wife and I have been competing with the metro earlier. Both of us finished bar two clues. This was one of them. With the letters we had we both agreed the answer may be 'eleven' but we still can't parse it either.

Presumably (and I am guessing)

'giving a sailor a dirty look' = AB-stain, which is the answer to 12(a or d), so you are taking one from twelve
