(i.e. with very small portions, beautifully presented, at rather high prices).
For example I've eaten in an upmarket fish restaurant in Maldon where this constitutes a main course (for, if I recall correctly, about £14)

and where a (not inexpensive) dessert looks like this

Every two weeks I travel for lunch with a pal at a Brewer's Fayre pub. We always have fish and chips, (upgraded by £1 each for bigger portions of fish). He has a half of Tetley's and me, a pint of soda water with bits of lemon etc. The latter is free - which is ridiculous.
Cost always under £12 in all, either because they give out vouchers or it's their special offer. I'd rather pay a bit more and have the old plates replaced, stained chairs refurbished, and tomatoes and mushrooms included in the gammon meal once again. The competition between the Wetherspoons and other multiples is too intense.
If he was still able to drive, he'd visit me and it would cost double.
PS. Always feel under the edge of tables- often sticky.
