Condensation In Loft?

Had a phone call today from a company called Ecohome who wanted to come and check our last lot of loft insulation for signs of condensation in the attic.

Apparently, it would take about thirty minutes to do this and we would be presented with a survey. Inspection and survey free of charge, of course. Fortunately, they would be in the area tomorrow and had two time slots free. Which one would I like?

I suspect that they will come and survey the loft,and tell us we have signs of condensation on the current insulation which they can put right by stripping it all out and putting something better in there. Am I being too suspicious?

nope not at all. You can check for condensation yourself and I wouldn't let anyone into my house from a cold call....in fact i don't even answer the phone unless I know who it is

Ecohome are an insulation company, their telesales department will be driven by commisions to book appointments. Their surveyor will not be climbing into your loft out of the kindness of his heart.
Bet your last penny that he will find faults that you didn't know existed.
Cancel the appointment and dont let them in even if they turn up on the doorstep.
If you had dampness in your loft you would be able to tell by the ceilings in the rooms below the loft .. they would have damp patches and marks all round.

I don't think you're being suspicious enough. I wouldn't dream of letting a cold caller come into the house however reputable a company. I think you might find them difficult to shake-off Tilly.

I didn't let them make an appointment. I said I wanted to check them out before committing to any thing.
I answered the call blocked number as I thought it was Russel from Mr T's bowls club!

I had my suspicions because they were. 'in the area tomorrow' and I was lucky that they had 'two spare appointments' and could 'fit us in.'

They can bog off, I think.

On the subject of insulation, my friend down the road got extra added to her loft under a government scheme which is now defunct I think. The folk who fitted it messed up, blocked her airbrick I think, and she went from a perfectly serviceable dry loft to one which was soaking with condensation!

Some years ago (6 or 7 I think) when their was a Government backed energy efficiency scheme on the go. Everything to do with saving energy was being given away, from loft insulation to boilers and light bulbs.
It was actualy scandalous the way the money was thrown around. Money was no problem .. the only problem was getting rid of it.. all £33M of it.
When it was over, I had to visit quite a few properties where the lofts were damp after the insulation guys had been and installed extra insulation. On each and every occasion it was the same problem. They insulated most lofts in 30 minutes or so .. they were being paid per loft. They had been throwing the insulation in and were in such a rush to get to the next loft.
The problems that followed were dampness in every case, all as a result of a shoddy installation. In every loft I had to roll up the newly installed insulation and pull it back and away from the eaves which had more or less become blocked by the extra insulation. Once the eaves were re- exposed, the air could once again flow across the loft and dry it out.
The reason that made people aware that they had a problem, was the damp marks all round the edges of the ceilings, nearest the outside walls.

Tilly, I would absolutely not let these people into your house, far less your loft. You can bet your bottom dollar that if you did, not only would they find problems which they would be able to fix for you, but that they would have a 'special offer' where if you sign up for the 'fix' the price would be so much cheaper, but they'd want you to sign there and then. Cancel!
