I've recently been offered a short term (8 month) contract working at the University of Glamorgan in Treforest near to Pontypridd and Cardiff. I am still debating whether to take the position. A big part of my decision will be finding somewhere to live.
As I don't really know the area too well could anyone suggest any particularly nice areas I should look for a place to rent and more importantly places to avoid?
I'm looking at about 400 - 500pcm for a 1 or 2 bed place.
If anyone can help in anyway I'd be most greatful.

have a look at this website: http://www.checkmyfile.com/neighbourhood.asp

if you know the vague postcodes of areas, it can help you decide if its a nice place or not.
Hi Angbur,

I went to Glaorgan Uni, the whole of Treforest is pretty run down to be honest *praying im not offending anyone*. I wouldn't say there were any really bad areas, it is very safe and a nice place to live/study, but there are no areas that really spring out as particularly nice areas. The whole of Treforrest is geared towards students, so all of the housing is very cheap, and the accomodation is all really geared towards students, hundreds of terraced houses.

I do really miss the Pink Shop tho!

There are some nice houses on Llantwit Road, away from the university (towards the left), this end is quieter than the main student area, and the houses are big.

Don't live anyhwere near the railway bridge right next to the university. I lived on John Street and we were flooded 3 times in 2 years, the river Taff burst quite a lot, and this area always gets very flooded. Especially Park St and some areas of Forest Road.

As for the Uni itself, it was the best 3 years of my life, enjoy it if you go!!

Good luck.
If you drive I would suggest Cardiff although the commute in the morning can be a bit of a nightmare... Treforest has mostly got student accomodation but then there is a high amount of that too in cardiff...you could always look at renting in the Llantwit Fardre or Tonteg areas (again if you drive this would be an easy commute) Also buses are fairly regular in that area because it's en route to Cardiff and Pontypridd. There are lots of new housing estases in those aeras and I imagine lots of renting opportunities. Your best bet would be to have a look at both if you've not already...and take it from there.
