Windows Xp - Wannacry
9 Answers
Although I have a laptop running on Windows 10, I also have a desktop PC on Windows XP. I know the risks involved but I have kept it because it runs software that won't operate on W10.
I have recently acquired from a family member, another desktop PC also on XP which has a better spec than mine and ideally I would like to bring this into use. However a free Malwarebyte run shows it is infected with the worm Wannacry/Double Pulsar - no doubt the reason the PC was cast out in 2017!
I would welcome any ideas from ABers as to how to clean up the PC. Does anyone know for example if the paid for version of Malwarebytes or any other product would remove the worm? I know it's is like closing the stable door after the horse has bolted but I have now installed the XP Service Pack 3.

Be patient Glen. Just go step by step, and don't forget to close your browsers. Took a pal a week to get rid of this worm and he is pretty clued up.

Thank you all for your comments but also please accept my apologies because the position I described was not quite correct.
The first scan was in fact with the free Avast which was already installed and it was this that showed the Wannacry message. I ran Malwarebytes which showed it to be clean.
I then ran PC Protect which showed a different virus plus a dozen or so unwanted programmes but no Wannacry. I then ran Malwarebytes again which showed only the PC Protect entries.
I have now quarantined the lot, uninstalled PC Protect and Avast and hope that might be the end of it.
Thanks again
