I seem to recall the Vikings did a load of axe throwing in the film of the same name.
They ran up to a castle door under a hail of arrows,rocks and burning oil and lobbed an axe at the closed door. Turns were taken until the axes reached the top of the door. The hero,probably Kirk Douglas, then used the axes,embedded in the door as a climbing step and they all lived merrily ever after.
