Studying in the USA
4 Answers
Hi, my son wanted to experience High School in the USA. Once he had completed all his Scottish Education I managed to get him an exchange programme for 1 year. The experience was brilliant and after 1 year stayed at the school to complete gthe graduation programme. He then decided to go to university and with advice from US embassey and help with application forms has been studying at The State University Alabama in Tuscaloosa. He has now graduated and has decided to continue with a further course in Atlanta. The system is excellent but very costly. I have searched for years to try and find funding but to no avail. Student loans are unavailable as he is not studying in the UK/Europe. If anyone has any advice in this matter I would be greatful as I feel that I cannot be the only Mom in this situation. I have funded the previous years and have said that I will find the next two years but it will be a loan from the Bank of Mom and have to be repaid (without interest once he is working). Thanks in advance.

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.why would there be and funding available for him to do what he wants post graduate - unless he approaches a company to sponsor him. people in this country dont get any funding for post university studying, unless its through their job for example let alone university studying, (where lots of people dont get any funding for that and have to pay course fees etc)
if he is a graduate with a university degree, why cant he get a job now and do the course part time, thus enabling him to fund or part fund himself?
are you asking about government grants etc? Again if so, why should they when he dosent pay any taxes here (and sounds like he may not have done all his life because he was too young). If he has been residing in america for some years as your question implies then he might not even be entitled to nhs care if he came back here, let alone any other state help.
He sounds like he is probably old enough to understand the value of money so my advice if you cant afford it is to say no to him! and let him learn you cant have everything you want in life

I agree with bednobs - tell him to get a job! Must students who do postgraduate degrees in this country either have to fund it themselves or get a loan. I have an M.A. and didn't know anyone at my university who got money from their mums. I can't believe that all his fellow students are being funded by their parents!
