Blackpool and Liverpool, two of the most deprived areas in Britain.
Real problems, people suffering and relying on schools, food banks and charities to provide the basics of life.
What should the government do to be more humane?

U.C. is not a bed of roses.
Real poverty exists and is ignored.
If it was a bed of roses, why would anyone get up at 5am on a cold, wet January morning for another slog?
It's not supposed to be a bed of roses. If it was very few would go out to work.
Question Author
Yes.
My very good friend, Emma, a single mother with a ten year old son, was on U.C. looking for a job, (is now working,) but just before she found a job, she found herself in a situation where all her bills were paid, and one evening, had no money to buy food for her sons school lunch.
In desperation, she went to the supermarket and stole a loaf and a packet of ham.
Security caught her and Police called.
She got a Police caution.
She got a job, and is one of the loveliest people I have ever met. A good friend, and proud.
This is what poverty drives decent people into.
Theland, your opening statement said this:
\\ Real problems, people suffering and relying on schools, food banks and charities to provide the basics of life.//
Are you now saying your friend chose to steal rather than go to a food bank?

I'm sorry, theland, that just seems a bit odd.

Son would have been entitled to free school meals.

Vulcan, foodbanks do not issue/give out perishables and are not open all hours on a daily basis.
Question Author
I don't know the circumstances, but food banks require a ticket and either she didn't have one or preferred to keep her poverty quiet.
I find it odd too. Surely children of those on benefits get free school meals?
Question Author
I will find out the circumstances.
Nailit, ////As far as I'm aware benefits are quite generous//
For an intelligent woman, that has got to be one of the most absurd statements that I have ever read.///

Really? Why? I know single mothers working 16 hours a week and collecting benefits who are doing well enough.

There is always something not quite right about the woeful tales people who moan about benefits tell. Theland’s story is not only inaccurate, it’s purposefully designed to tug at the heartstrings (as is Theland’s wont with his stories) with tales of a mother who’s paid all her bills, couldn’t afford to provide her child (who was entitled to free school lunches anyway) with a sandwich, but was too proud to tell anyone she was broke. Strangely though she had no shame in telling people she’s a shoplifter. I don’t believe that story for one moment.

Similarly, there has to be more to your story about your friend whose benefits were stopped because he was doing voluntary work. There is something you’re not telling us.

I travel a lot and have been to practically every city in the country - just weeks ago Manchester (again), Liverpool (again), and Birmingham (again) - which offers, in my opinion, the best shopping in the country - and the splendid city centre shops are always heaving. I can honestly say I don’t see the poverty you and Theland bang on about. I never see an old banger of a car on the roads, there are new houses sprouting up everywhere, and they’re all occupied so someone must be able to afford to buy them. I’d take an educated guess and say they’re people who take responsibility for themselves and work for a living.

Tell you what - why don't you and Theland try being a single mum working all the hours God sends at a job you hate, paying your mortgage, paying your bills, feeding your family, and still ending up stony broke every month with no prospect of a handy financial lifeline popping through the letter box to help you along. Then you’ll have something to complain about.
How much more of my money would you like, Theland, to be able to provide more free money to other people?
is that from experience Naomi....
a relative is in that sort of financial mess as her husband decided he wants a divorce.
as she has been doing all the accounts for their business she does have skills, but she also has two kids at school. so has had to go cap in hand to
the benefits people as hubby has refused to pay for anything, so essentially without UC she would be broke.
I'm going to make a move while it's still dry.
Have a happy day everyone.
wrong thread boaty....
My daughter is a single mom. Raised her son with no financial help at all from ex spouse. She's worked two jobs for years.
Her rent for a two up two down terrace is £650. Plus full council tax. She live in a traditionally low paid region. She manages without handouts and is rightly proud of her independent choice. Benefits are supposed to be a safety net, not a lifestyle choice. She doesn't drink, smoke, or holiday, she smiles a lot and I am proud of her.
Good for her David,
Where are the fathers of these poor children? Why aren't they being brought to book and being made to face their responsibilities? I know that money used to be deducted at source from their wages, IF they work of course. Does this no longer happen?
