For the record I have no intention of criticising the government for introducing this legislation. I worry about legislation drafted in haste, and motivated at least partly by the need to be seen to be doing something, and yes I think the retrospective nature at least deserves testing. But automatic and improperly-supervised early release of people who go on to re-offend was clearly a mistake and I can't argue against wanting to rectify it.
the problem is that parole boards are full of hand wringing lefties. Just abolish the whole *** show and make everyone do at least what they are sentenced to.
