I have converted a CD track into an MP3 - is there a way to place it on the AB - or do I need another format?

However that only allows other ABer's to download the file, so that they can then play it in Windows Media Player (or VLC or whatever other media player they use).
If you want ABers to be able to hear your file directly (rather than having to download it and open it in their media player), probably the easiest way to do it is to create a video file from it that just uses a static picture and then upload that file to Youtube. (You can then embed the file into an AB post in the usual way).
I use this website to create video files with just a single image. (It only takes a few clicks):
