This is a should do in the Highway Code. That is to say you cannot be prosecuted for failure to use your indicators. However, it may be held against you if, say, you were involved in an accident which may have been caused by such failure.

Additionally, it may help determine whether a prosecution for other matters, such as careless driving, is brought. If you pull out in front of someone without signalling the police may be more likely to pursue a charge of careless driving than if you had pulled out with an indication.

So, in short, you dont have to, but you ought to.
I suppose if there are no pedestrians or road users around to require some indication of your next manoeurve, then it's pointless, but I suppose after years of driving,it becomes a habit.

Oh do cars come with indicators now then or are people mind readers?
What is the position at traffic lights where the right lane has arrows painted on the road indicating a right turn only?
I have noticed that most drivers do not indicate and some go straight on making this confusing and dangerous for drivers coming the other way.
Arrows painted on the road at traffic lights do not indicate that the lane is right turn only unless there is a sign confirming this.

ZACSMASTER has answered correctly, Advanced driving methods including Class 1 Police Driving teach that indicators should not be used if they will not benefit any other road user or pedestrian. It's the same as talking to yourself, other people think your loony.

Also getting in the habit of doing things whilst driving is highly dangerous You should do everything with concious thought not automatically.
But not everyones a policeman or has advanced driving, so next time someone doesnt indicate ill just presume im not benefiting from them just turning off into a road and crashing into the back of the idiot.
I suppose everything you do is a concious decision, but things like changing gear at the right time is a habit to good drivers. As for advanced motorists, what a pretentious name. No harm can occur if you indicate on a deserted road, pointless or not and who knows, there may even be a cycle without lights that you failed to notice due to bad light, weather conditions or whatever. Always be ready for the unexpected
indicating is only for people who don't drive bmws!!!
I am surprised we had to wait 'til the ninth answer for the ole chestnut. lol.
It is not just advance drivers that are taught to use selective indication where a signal would be made if after an effective observation that signal was deemed of benifit. But learner drivers are taught this too by most good instructors.
